Mobile publishing and advertising leader Spreed Inc. (http://www.spreedinc.com), has partnered with community-based newspaper publisher Metroland Media (www.metroland.com), to deliver a full-suite mobile publishing tools for BlackBerry and iphone to help their daily newspapers build, measure and monetize their mobile audience.

Metroland Media will roll out applications, – in collaboration with Spreed – for the iPhone and BlackBerry smart phone devices that will enable smart phone users in the Hamilton, Guelph and Waterloo Region to read news from the Hamilton Spectator, the Guelph Mercury and the Waterloo Region Record. The apps will allow advertisers to reach users of smart phones in these markets through highly targeted, rich-media advertising.

“We are beginning to see a large group of newspaper publishers in Canada embrace mobile platforms as a new, innovative and profitable distribution channel,” says Spreed CEO Anthony Novac. “Spreed’s mobile platform cuts distribution costs significantly and also provides the opportunity to create a completely new and untapped revenue source for newspaper organizations, utilizing the unique advertising opportunities made available by mobile devices. We are excited to be working with a group as innovative as Metroland Media.”

These applications will have the same look and feel, but will contain unique branding, stories, images, and community events. In addition to the applications, The Guelph Mercury, Hamilton Spectator and Waterloo Region Record will also be licensed for Spreed’s CleverAds mobile advertising platform and MobileInsight, its mobile analytics suite. Access to MobileInsight will allow the newspapers to garner deep insight into their readership and include mobile usage statistics as part of their digital circulation numbers. It will also offer targeted advertising opportunities to their existing clients, enabling local advertisers to display their message to the right user, at the right time, in the right place.

“This is a great opportunity for our daily newspapers to extend reach and service to readers”,  says Paul McCuaig, Publisher of The Waterloo Region Record and Guelph Mercury. “ Working with Spreed we believe we can continue to develop our role in the digital marketplace and as journals of record for our communities.”

According to Morgan Stanley Research, the smart phone market will grow to one billion units by 2013. Informa Telecoms 7 Media predicts that mobile advertising revenues will increase eight-fold by 2015 to around $25 billion.
